Spark, Angel Robe & Grandmother

Three films by experimental filmmaker and video artist Yuki Kawamura:

Reminiscent of the intimate domestic dramas of Yasujiro Ozu Spark tells the story of a young boy named Yu who comes from a loving family, but how will his world change when his mother gives birth to a second child and she makes an unexpected trip to the hospital.

The traditional 16th-century Noh drama Hagoromo, the tale of an angel whose robe has been stolen, is used as counterpoint to the daily lives of a Japanese single mother in Paris who must come to terms with her French ex-husband for the care of their young child.

Grandmother is both a loving documentary of Kawamura’s own grandmother shot during her last days filmed by Kawamura at her bedside and a meditation on the impermanence of life.
