Independent animator Naoyuki Tsuji’s working methods are simple: with a stick of charcoal in hand and no set narrative in mind he painstakingly brings to life sometimes dream-like, sometimes nightmarish images that dwell somewhere between sleep and waking. There’s no better example of this than his 1995 short The Rule of Dreams that takes us on a surreal journey through death, the after life, and back to the land of the living again.
